THE PROJECT

What are the goals of the Promising Futures™ Campaign for the Trades and Technology Complex?

The Promising Futures™ Campaign is providing resources to the Trades and Technology Complex which will:

  • Create opportunities by providing space for up to an additional 8,100 more full and part time students each year in hands-on, career-oriented training.
  • Address future workforce shortage by producing more highly skilled graduates in high-demand sectors such as energy, construction, manufacturing and automation.
  • Ensure SAIT students have the best study tools and financial resources to allow them to concentrate on their studies and successfully graduate so they can meet their personal goals and the workforce needs of industry.
  • Attract youths to trades and technology careers through the Career Exploration Centre—an innovative, interactive learning centre geared to interest junior high students.

When will the Trades and Technology Complex open?

Construction of the Trades and Technology Complex is on schedule and on budget and is scheduled to open in 2012.

Work on the project began in late summer 2009 with the demolition of the Thomas Riley Building, B-Wing. Demolition of the Murdoch Parkade along 16th Avenue—where Aldred Centre is being constructed—was completed in the fall 2009.  Demolition of Colonel Walker Building to pave the way for the Johnson-Cobbe Energy Centre began in January 2010.

In line with SAIT’s desire to follow the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System for the Trades and Technology Complex, all concrete, rebar, copper and steel has been recycled.

How will the new Complex attract youth to trades and technology careers?

The Trades and Technology Complex will house the Career Exploration Centre, an innovative and interactive learning centre for junior-high school students. Students will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and exploration in the areas of energy, construction and manufacturing and automation. Our goal is to engage youth in trades and technology careers which is critical to Alberta’s future economy.

How will Albertans benefit from the Trades and Technology Complex?

As a direct result of the Trades and Technology Complex, SAIT will increase its capacity to enrich communities across our province by providing local businesses with thousands of additional graduates trained with the latest technology and skills required to meet the demands of industry.

Our 2010 Graduate Employment Survey shows SAIT students are successful in entering the workforce. 93% reported they were employed shortly after graduating and 83% reported that they were working in their field of study.

Well-prepared and trained students entering the workforce will result in a more prosperous and stable province.

THE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

What is the campaign goal?

The initial Promising Futures™ Campaign goal for the Complex was set by the SAIT Board of Governors at $75 million. Thanks to the generosity of corporations, SAIT staff, students, alumni and many other individuals that milestone was reached in July 2011. See the Source of Funding chart for more details.

Subsequently, SAIT has set a new target to raise an additional $25 million to ensure students will:

  • Have the most up-to-date technology and equipment to gain experience with tools they will encounter in industry.

  • Benefit from having curricula and programs available to meet their educational needs.

  • Have access to more scholarships and bursaries that reward academic excellence and to remove financial barriers for students who couldn’t otherwise gain a post-secondary education.
